USF President Judy Genshaft has announced her retirement after 18 years at the school. She is leaving on a high note with record-breaking academic levels, celebrations of their $1 billion fundraising campaign, and high rankings among UF and FSU. Read about the Judy Genshaft era at USF.

In response to the Parkland school shooting, three mothers formed the Coalition for School Safety, Inc., a nonprofit that raises funds for public school safety and security. Their first project called Start with Hello Week, which teaches inclusion and deals with social isolation, has been picked up by many schools. The coalition is also helping add security cameras, public address speakers + classroom window coverings as additional security priorities. 🏫

30 professionals were selected for the 36th class of Leadership Lakeland, a year-long program hosted by the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, which involves commitment to various meetings, receptions, retreats + a graduation at completion. This program was designed to discover leadership within the community from businesses as large as Publix to a small two-person firm. Meet the 2019 Leadership Lakeland Class.

MegaCon, a superheroes, villains + anime characters galore event, is coming back to the Tampa Convention Center for the third time, bringing 400 retail + artist exhibits. Event organizers expect it to attract thousands of fans and cause downtown hotels to fill up for the weekend of Sept. 21-23. With a large Orlando market, Tampa Bay’s tourism market is not far behind, allowing the event to occur annually.

35. The amount of buildings that will go in addition to the nine that have already been taken down at former West Lake Apartments just west of downtown Lakeland. In their place, Twin Lakes Estates, a modern housing complex for residents of all ages, will be built with featured townhomes, a playground + swimming pool. A number of apartments will be offered for families with higher incomes, as well as a three-story apartment building for seniors ages 62+. 🏘

The upcoming 30,000 sq. ft. Boxi Park at Lake Nona will be an outdoor venue comprised entirely of repurposed shipping containers built on the idea of Reduce, Reuse + Recycle. The district will include restaurants, bars, beach volleyball courts + seating for live entertainment. This is an addition to the previously announced 100-acre Lake Nona Town Center coming in 2020 but the park itself is expected to open in December 2018. ♻

Last Wednesday, an infusion center for cancer patients opened at Florida Hospital Celebration Health campus. The 18,000 sq. ft. facility has private patient bays and access to clinical trials. The building has plans for an additional 2,000 sq. ft. of expansion. A new $88M five-story patient tower is also expected to open in 2020 and will include a mother-baby unit, a progressive care unit, and expanded cardiac + open-heart procedures.

A chain of Publix stores is opening across Tampa Bay with one in St. Pete this past weekend and a long-awaited USF location coming this December. Recent openings are happening just south as well, in Manatee and Sarasota County. In September, Publix will open five stores in Florida and one in North Carolina
